|
Theories form part of the foundation to social work practice and subsequently lead to different methods of intervention. ... While it is possible to share the principles of any theory or intervention, with service users, one that does so explicitly is task-centred work. This piece will seek to examine the history of task centred work and demonstrate the method using the hypothetical scenario of Lucy who doesn’t work, has recently lost her husband and whose friends live out of the area. ...

Reid & Shyne (1969) undertook a research project through which they found that brief periods of service, concentrating on limited goals chosen by the client were often more effective than open-ended work. Task-centred social work (Reid & Epstein, 1972) therefore grew out of a need to provide an intervention, which supported its own practice.

3. ... Problems of social transition
6. ... Behavioural problems (Reid, 1978 and Reid & Hanrahan, 1981)
The initial stage of task centred work is problem scanning (Doel, 1994) during which the service user’s concerns are identified, explored, broken down and ranked in order of priority.
