There is unification in society that a single teen who finds herself in an unwanted pregnancy should seek the support of empathic, caring, knowledgeable adults. ... Deciding whether to have an abortion or continue the pregnancy will probably have a major long-term impact on the young woman’s psychological and emotional well-being, her ability to continue formal education, and even her future financial status. ... This question goes way beyond mere concerns over whether abortion is right or wrong. ... In 1994, 55 percent of pregnancies resulted in birth, 31 percent in abortion, and 14 percent in miscarriage. ... (Siegel, 2003) Abortion had been significantly linked to behavioral changes such as promiscuity, smoking, eating disorders, and drug abuse. ... (Reardon, 1998) In a study of post-abortion patients only 8 weeks after their abortion, researchers found that 44% complained of nervous disorders, 36% had experienced sleep disturbances, 31% had regrets about their decision, and 11% had been prescribed psychotropic medicine by their family doctor. ... The medical, emotional, and psychological consequences of an abortion are serious and can be lasting. ... When a young woman goes for an abortion and does not need a parent present, she may not have knowledge of her prior medical or psychological history. ... Moreover, in light of the dangers involved with the abortion procedure itself, the fact that a young woman going along without parental support is particularly troubling.
