White Collar Crime

... ‘Nonviolent white collar criminals kill more people than all the violent street criminals combined. By virtually any criterion, white collar crime is our most serious crime problem. Determining how many people are killed and injured annually because of white-collar crime is difficult but the claim that such crimes are harmless, nonviolent offenses is not true. White-collar criminals evade the sensationalism of the media and, most often, legal consequences, but the economic and social consequences of white-collar crime are high. By outlining the economic and social costs of suite crime as compared to street crime, the ‘real crimes in our society are evident. As seen in Flin Flon, however, despite the consequences of white-collar crime, the problem persists.
White-collar crime encompasses occupational and corporate crime. ... Examples of occupational crime are computer crime, tax evasion, expense account fraud and theft. Theft of hospital supplies, discussed in, Neutralization and Deviance in the Workplace: Theft of Supplies and Medicines by Hospital Nurses, is an example of occupational crime (Dabney, 1995). ... are white-collar crimes committed by legitimate formal organizations, through the individuals inside them, with the aim of furthering the interests of the corporation as well as those of the individuals involved" (Snider, 1990: 14). An example of corporate crime is the tobacco industries engagement in a criminal conspiracy to hide knowledge of the ill effects caused by smoking from government agencies and the public in the interest of making profits (Simone & Hagan, 1999: 26). The key difference between corporate and occupational crime is who is being victimized and by whom. Both are a form of white-collar crime, however, and are very costly.
