american history x

When growing up parents play an important role in shaping and molding of their children. Mothers and fathers act as an important resource, and each parent’s different style of child rearing is equally important in his or her child’s life. The impact of loosing a parent due to death or divorce can have adverse affects on a child. Children, who grow up in a single parent world, are often problematic and psychologically fragile and their psychologically susceptible lives are easily influenced by the actions of others around them. The extremely controversial movie American History X, deals with the ugly issue of the rhetoric of hate in a skinhead society, but also has an important underlying premise. Along with the main theme of white supremacy, there is an underlying theme of the impact of losing a parent, how vulnerable their children become as a result and their need for a role model. (Fathers…) This theme is first apparent though the character Derek Vinyard. Derek at the beginning of the movie is portrayed as the epitome of white supremacy. The apparent questions (Where did this influence come from? What drove him to the ideals of white supremacy? Why Venice Beach, California) are not yet known. In order to understand this you have to piece the different flashback scenes together. The first example of this, begins with the narrations of Derek’s younger brother Daniel, who is finishing his paper: “Its hard to look back and see the truth about the people you love. I think if you ask Derek why it all went the way it did and where it all started, he’d still say it started when our father was murdered. The truth is it started earlier.” The scene then shifts to a black and white flashback of the whole family, including the father sitting around the breakfast table and shows a very important conversation between Derek and his father.
