There was a time when every schoolchild knew the story of Heinrich Schliemann, the German merchant who fulfilled a lifelong dream of finding Homer's Troy. But Schliemann was not the first to identify the mound of HIsarlik as ancient Troy, nor the first to conduct systematic excavations there. Seven years before Schliemann began his assault on the mound, Frank Calvert, a British expatriate and diplomat who owned much of the land around the site, excavated the tell with the intent of finding the epic citadel.
