Getting meaning from pictures

What do we SEE? Objects, shapes, figures. Some objects have become associated with certain emotions, feelings and concepts. An object can be used as a short cut in a message, but it relies on the understanding of the symbol by its audience, e.g. a lion is an animal but it can also be used to symbolise bravery; flags show patriotism. As with all image concepts the reading depends on the context of the viewer. Size, e.g. size of object of interest. How are the different parts of the picture represented?
