Good Will Hunting

1. The canonical of the story “Good Will Hunting,” takes place in Boston, NY. The first sequence of events is based in the south part of Boston where a group of young men, Will the main character, and his friends grew up and continue to live. Will lives in a one room flat, with little for materialistic possessions except books, a place to sleep, a lamp, and a few other essentials. The guys live day to day, going to work, doing the motions to pay the bills, then drinking, smoking and fighting after work. On their days off they might attend to a little league baseball game in the neighborhood, or go to the batting cages and talk about girls. This is the same routine that they have had since high school. Will is employed through his parole officer and has taken a job as a janitor in Harvard University in which the other part of the story takes place. On the campus at Harvard University, a math professor of an applied theory class proposes a chance of immediate success in the world of mathematics, although expecting that no one will fulfill the expectation. Events on campus are occurring that would be stereotypical of an upper class University such as lectures, studying, the pristine campus grass, etc. 2. The discovery of a genius boy,Will, in the slums of Boston changes the “norm” of both Will and the professor. This inciting incident occurs ten minutes into the movie, and two days in the movie’s narrative. The professor gives the students a problem to solve and puts it in the hallway outside of class. This problem is to challenge the most intellectual students, and was offered immediate success if the problem was solved before the end of the semester. As the audience, we are revealed the dramatic irony when Will solves the problem the same night unknown of the reward that was promised. The tension is escalated, as this genius stays anonymous. When a second problem is purposed to the class, one of even more extreme difficulty, Will is caught writing on the board during his late night shift.
