By looking at the history of a genre, we can map corresponding changes in our culture. The comedic genre has certainly changed shape over time. Situation comedies of earlier years of the 50's and 60's depict a time where television was considered a family medium. Most of the comedies of the time consisted of the nuclear family characterized by typical problems of the times. Shows like Leave it to Beaver and The Donna Reed Show were considered examples. A basic story line would entail one of the children with a minor dilemma of a broken lamp in the house or making two dates on the same night and would be solved by some words of advice by the parent.
