One would think that with a classic best seller like “the Great Gatsby” you would have a film that was a best seller also, unfortunately this is not the case with Francis Ford Coppola’s adaptation of Scott Fitzgerald’s novel. ... The film is reasonably faithful to the novel, but there are a number of irritating faults which make the film almost unwatchable. ... The film captures non of the flair and imagination of the novel, Redford as Gatsby and Farrow as Daisy were painful to watch. ...
All the characters in the novel were so vivid and well described that the reader could feel the life in them. How is it that so much of this vitality has been missed in Francis Ford Coppola’s adaptation of the novel, especially in the same year that he wrote and directed “The Godfather”.
