Gone With The Wind

The South used to be flourishing, as everything seems to be, before something like a war. War brings people together, as well as breaks them apart. The South was in poor shape after the Civil War. Gone With the Wind is a drama set around Civil War times in the South. The main character is Scarlett O'Hara, the spoiled, manipulative daughter of an Irish immigrant plantation owner. Her father, seeing her as his successor, teaches her lessons about the importance of the land. "…Land is the only thing in the world worth working for, worth fighting for, worth dying for, because it’s the only thing that lasts," he comments in the face of war. Scarlett is not-so-secretly in love with Ashley Wilkes, who is about to marry the gentle, demure Melanie Hamilton (his blood relative, for their family is one who believes that they understand one another more so when they have the same blood running through their veins). When Scarlett confesses her love to Ashley, he admits his particular-mutual feelings for her, but notes that Melanie will make a much better wife. This is also pointed out early on by Scarlett’s “friends” whom had been conferring with Melanie just about this; Scarlett may as well just have all the boys on their toes, pursuing her at first, but she’s not one to be married.
