The Role of Music in HAIR HAIR, an epic musical filmed in New York City, tells the story of Claude, a young draftee from Oklahoma on his way to Vietnam. In New York, he meets a carefree group of hippies who take him on a whirlwind adventure. They introduce him to a lifestyle full of drugs, sex and music. Along with this lifestyle comes an introduction to issues of race, gender, politics and war. These issues are expressed through song, dance, and stunning Central Park Photography which create an audible and visual energy making the film interesting and successful. Music plays a tremendous role in the medium of film. Whether or not it is used in abundance, music can serve many purposes. Clearly music dates a film and helps the audience remember the movie better. Also, it illustrates characters’ emotions, adds suspense, and provides emotional cues that the audience should be following. However, does music serve a deeper purpose? In the movie HAIR, music not only creates emotion, but it is the heart and sole of the film. It gives further description of the issues that the film addresses.
