There’s are a few ways that shows the influence of Dreyer’s The Passion Of Joan Of Arc in Von Breaking the waves : 1) Religion , the theme of religion run through out the film and shows how the protagonists of both films put religion ( God) above anything. 2) The performances of the protagonists , through my search on line I have learned that Von Trier asked Emily Watson to study the performance of Maria Falconetti in The Passions of Joan of Arc ; which it shows.
