“Light It Up” and themes of power
The text I have chosen to discuss is a movie entitled “Light It Up” – Written and Directed by Craig Bolotin. I chose this particular text because I found it to have varying themes of power. ... Whilst these were interesting texts, none of them were as powerful as “Light It Up”.
In the movie “Light It Up” the narrator (Ziggy) begins by describing the power of knowledge in ghetto like terms. His quote “Most guys thought Stephanie was stuck up. ... In a show of power, Officer Jackson gets into an argument with Ziggy and his friend Lester. ... This statement, uttered at the right moment, offers Lester and Officer Jackson the ability to walk away with dignity arguably giving Ziggy power over the situation.
The movie then displays a more traditional theme of power, that of the teacher in the classroom. Whilst any teacher has implied power, we can see that Mr. Knowles has far greater power than usual, because he (a white teacher) has gained the respect of his class, who are predominantly black and from the ghettos of New York.
