The classic film, Citizen Kane, is regularly regarded as the best American-made film ever. ... Part of the reason why Citizen Kane is given such accolades is due to the character development. The personality of Charles Foster Kane, the movie’s main character, shines through as the strongest and most thoroughly developed. It is clear that this character has a complicated personality and is not easy to understand by any means.
From the beginning, the film portrays, as one reviewer put it, Kane’s “life, loves, enemies, successes and failures,” (Cannon, 1997). The progression through Charles Kane’s life is viewed differently by each of his narrators. Whether or not their own beliefs of Charles’ personality and memories influenced their recollections is unknown. The attempts to find the true meaning of Kane’s last word, “Rosebud,” are nothing more than an excuse to delve into Kane’s past and explore the persona of this man. While Kane’s personality can certainly be described as an “enigma, a puzzle which allows no single solution to explain all,” an application of Erikson’s eight stages of development can be used to evaluate the inner thoughts and feelings of Mr. Kane (Cannon, 1997).
Erikson’s psychosocial stages of development put an emphasis on the early childhood as the formative years of an individuals’ personality, yet still place importance in the continued life-long development. His personality theory places greater value in the social area in comparison to other more sexual-based theories. ... A proper balancing of the two competing forces will result in an ego virtue emanating from each stage. ... It seems that Kane was able to aptly complete this stage of progress in his early childhood development. ...
It can be argued that Charles Foster Kane properly balanced the competing forces of the first three developmental stages. ... A blatant example exists in Kane’s discussion with Thatcher over the purpose of the Enquirer:
As Charles Foster Kane, who has eighty-two thousand, six hundred and thirty-one shares of Metropolitan Transfer … I sympathize with you. Charles Foster Kane is a dangerous scoundrel, his paper should be run out of town and a committee should be formed to boycott him.
