This film is a traditional Russian film directed by Sergei M. Eisenstein. This film is famous worldwide. Also Russian Cinema has a different tradition of filmmaking than the rest. They have the “Montage” theory. The Russians were really theoretical and they applied it too. So the Russians believed that the foundations of films was editing which is what the Montage is. Because you can’t tell a story or narrative without editing, and you can’t tell a story without at least 2 images. Eisenstein conformed to this idea, but actually primarily the Moscow Film school promoted this idea though. Specifically Eisenstein believed in what he called “Collision Montage”, which means that the images have to collide with another, this will create a more dynamic film. So you know, shot A and B should be significantly different in some ways, other than being similar to each other. Eisenstein means that there should be differences of many kinds between these individual shots. And this should appeal to the viewers on all levels, so you can see physical development as well through action, and the emotional level that makes you respond emotionally in some way as well. And also the intellectual level, so that you think. Eisenstein in a way was a still photographer.
