Witness

In today’s world there are many different cultures. Films are trying more and more to show these differences and the ways in which they affect people. Film directors use lighting, framing, thresholds and body language to portray how these cultures differ. In the film Witness the difference is shown between an Amish community and modern American society. The film raises many issues but mainly the different attitudes towards violence. He story is revolved around a small Amish boy, Samuel, who unwillingly witnesses a murder on his first trip to the city out of the community in which he has grown up in. The story is based around Samuel, his mother, Rachel, and John Book the police officer investigating the murder. We see the relationship grow between Samuel and John and also between John and Rachel. From this we see the way that others in their cultures react to their actions and the different ways that they deal with it. The whole plot of the film is ironic, violence is what brings Book to the community but it is also what makes him so different from the Amish and is therefore his downfall. The director Peter Weir uses many techniques to show the many obvious differences between these people but also the many less obvious similarities.
