Imagine the movie Witness without music. ... The importance of the music is evident.
Before any visual images are shown, music is played. This music is relaxing music with a hint of sadness and mystery. This music shapes the audiences emotions, and then the images reinforce this.
If no music had been played, the opening for example would seem long and drawn out, and wouldn’t appear to have any meaningful purpose. ...
If director Peter Weir had played a different type of music at the start, the audience would have been expecting something different and would have been feeling different emotions. The slow, sad and relaxing music doesn’t necessarily mean a funeral, but creates the emotions in the audience that one could occur. Think about the way the music in the opening scenes affect your emotions and compare it to this:
