American Influence on Canadian Identity

The term Canadian Identity is one that is highly controversial. It is a term that can seldom be discussed without somehow being linked to American culture and American values. This is no exception on the Canadian music scene. Since Canada is a lesser-populated nation with the same language and several similar values, it is prone to being infiltrated with American culture. This paper will explain the meaning of Canadian identity, discuss some Canadian artists from this perspective and also discuss some commentary regarding the issue in general by writers and researchers such as Robert Wright.
Canadian identity is arguably based on protesting American values and culture. Some argue that there is more focus on what Canadian identity is not than what it is. For instance, in the extremely popular beer commercial run by Molson Canadian a patriotic Canadian, with whom several everyday Canadians identified ranted and raved about how Canadian he was. Joe did this by opposing the American perspective of a Canadian and basically defining his Canadian identity from the views of an American. On some levels, this also applies to American music. Some songs considered Canadian, especially the ones done before Canada’s centennial in 1967 were considered so based on their protest of American culture and values rather than on any celebration of Canada’s own culture and values.
There has been a method developed by the Canadian government to identify Canadian artists and Canadian music. ... They make the laws and regulate broadcasting, they cut or provide funding for artists, they can aid certain artists by promoting their material (essentially material which in some way or the other center on national identity) and they can also censor material thereby blocking out any competition or material, which is disagreeable to them. The reasons for this great concern of the government in popular music include the facts that music integrates and educates, it has a strong influence on the public and their cultural and moral standards, opinions and beliefs.
