This book stood out to begin with due to the author’s intimate relationship with the “master” Beethoven. Anton Felix Schindler was very close to Beethoven the last ten years of his life. Beethoven AS I Knew Him represents a second biography written by Schindler that is much more thorough and in depth than his hastily written first version from 1840. The book begins with a brief view of Beethoven’s family and early life and studies covering 1770-1800. ... A redeeming quality of this book is the amount of specific actions of Beethoven that are written about with great care in detail, from his responses to critics and friends to his reaction to his oncoming deafness there is a sense of connection with the subject. ... Schindler had the good fortune to observe this difficult time of Beethoven’s life. There were many troubles for Beethoven during this time. ...
There is a considerable amount of information after the biography of Beethoven’s life. ... A very helpful supplement provided in the book is some information about false or incorrectly written statement concerning Beethoven’s life and works. ... There are many books in circulation that are studies of Beethoven’s symphonies, but in looking at quite a few Grove’s book came out as the most useful. The book is of course a very detailed analysis of the nine symphonies of Beethoven. ... Grove manages to explain any influence, either personal or musical that might have caused Beethoven to write some things the way he did.
