Chronology 1770 – Beethoven was born on December 15 or 16. (The exact date of his birth is unknown; however we do know that he was baptized on December 17). 1773 – The death of Beethoven’s grandfather, Ludwig, on December 24. (Ludwig served as a father figure to young Beethoven, whose own father was a drunk). 1775 – Beethoven’s grandmother, Josepha, dies. 1778 – Beethoven holds his first public concert in Cologne on March 26. 1782 – He completes his first published works, The Dressler Variations for piano. 1784 – In June, Beethoven becomes a deputy organist in Bonn, working under the tutelage of C.G. Neefe. 1787 – Beethoven’s mother dies of consumption on July 17. 1792– Beethoven goes to Vienna in November to study with Hayden; His father dies on December 18, in Bonn. 1795 – Beethoven gives his first public performance in Vienna on March 29; Also in 1795, he proposes to a woman named Magdalena Willman, who leaves him heartbroken. 1797-1799 – Beethoven begins to experience notable signs of hearing loss. 1801 – Completed “Moonlight Sonata.” 1802 – Wrote the “Heiligenstadt Testament,” in which he confessed his feelings of helplessness and despair over his increasing deafness. 1803 – Composed the “Eroica” Symphony. 1807 – Began composition of the Fifth Symphony. 1808 – Wrote the Sixth Symphony. 1816 – Beethoven became ill. (He remained ill for the majority of his final years). 1822 – Began working on the Ninth Symphony. 1826 – Beethoven experiences declining health. He has the first of four operations. 1827 – Beethoven died on March 26, at the age of 56. One of the most fascinating aspects of Beethoven’s life, his deafness, is also one of the most tragic.
