The Baroque Era style began around 1600 with the origins of opera and concluded around 1757 with the death of Haendel. Baroque style is often characterized by elaborate decoration and intellectual complexity. ... At the end of the era, complex counterpoint is frequently found. The best-known composers of the Baroque Era include Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741), Georg Frideric Handel 1685-1759), and Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). Two early developments in the Baroque Era were the rise of opera, exemplified by Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) in Venice and Mantua, and the rise of instrumental music, exemplified by Giovanni Gabrieli (1553-1612) in Venice. ... This was reflected in Monteverdis description of "two practices," the first was the old Renaissance practice of notes as the main feature of music and the second was the new Baroque idea that words were the main feature of music, which led to unusual dissonances and other expressive qualities suggested by the text. In the new style, the harmonic accompaniment was represented by an instrumental group common throughout the era called the basso continuo, which included a harmonic instrument such as a harpsichord, lute, or organ, and a melodic bass instrument such as a cello. As Baroque style evolved in the Seventeenth Century, counterpoint returned, but using the context of major and minor scales instead of Renaissance modes. |
