How can message rap and gangster rap differ so greatly in their knowledge and opinions of women? To answer this question, we must first examine the music and determine which messages contrast and alternately which converge. Hip hop music of all genres frequently refers to the relationships between men and women, but the variation of theme within this topic is important when analysing the music’s meaning.
How can one rapper tell a girl,
“…put your lips on my dick and suck my asshole too…”2
while another pleads,
“I want to say something that’s a little overdue,
the disrespect for women has got to be through”3
I believe the answer lies in the contrasts themselves and so will describe and discuss several different viewpoints and the possible meanings behind their lyrics.
Nowhere is the sheer hatred of women more prevalent than in the genre of west-coast gangster rap. Here, male rappers regularly describe their relationships as short-lived, physical encounters with nameless, faceless girls often fuelled by drugs or alcohol. ... A’s album “Straight Outta Compton”, rapper Ice Cube insists all of the women in his life are solely after his money and have no interest in him personally. ... – Ice Cube”4
Miami-based rap group 2 Live Crew frequently describe women as mere sexual playthings. In their 1990 highly controversial album “As Nasty As They Want to Be”, which was subsequently banned in Broward County, Florida record shops, rappers Fresh Kid Ice and Brother Marquis managed “87 descriptions of oral sex, 116 mentions of male and female genitalia, and other lyrical passages referring to male ejaculation”5. These range from descriptions of sexual intercourse with schoolgirls or married women;
“Fucked the neighbours wife,
And broke up a happy home.
