Censorship in Music
After the Civil War, southerners were banned from singing confederate songs because they were said to be Un-American (Fischer 1). The censoring of music has been a controversial topic ever since. The very idea of censoring music is wrong. ... Though much rock music and especially rap music may be vulgar and indecent, the fact is that indecent speech is protected by the U. ... Censoring music is wrong because it takes away a first amendment right from the musicians, it takes more responsibility away from the already irresponsible parents, and it does all of these for a reason that has no proof to back it up. ... Nuzum said in response to a question about researching for his book, “I was expecting to find evidence that music did something bad to people. ... Nuzum also said, “I found that there’s little—and by ‘little’ I mean there’s evidence that shows that the kind of music you like will influence the way you talk, the way you dress, very superficial things—but nothing that influences moral or ethical decisions, no evidence that a good person will do bad things because they listen to music” (2). Nuzum’s research shows that there is no connection between music and delinquent behavior.
