Counterculture of the 1960s Mary Jane Infects the Music Industry

The insubordinate youth of the 1960s were influenced greatly by the introduction of drug-saturated music. During a time where a wide generation gap was apparent, many youth fell back on the stability of music, specifically rock n’ roll. The music was the generation’s way of saying, “We can make it on our own, we can do this our way” instead of giving in to the rules and oppressions the older generation dragged them through. Young adults of the 1960s were sick of the Establishment and felt that a self-fulfilling life was the one to lead. The music and the people changed their message and outlook as more drugs were experimented with. Lyrics of the early 1960s morphed into drug soaked lyrics of the late sixties. Outdoor music festivals brought people, music and drugs together in a very harmonious state. The people of the sixties always looked towards peace, love, unity and music to get through life. The addition of drugs to their lifestyle lead to a constant euphoric state, where feelings were more important then actions and there was nothing like a good music high.
By the beginning of the 1960s most rock n’ roll had faded out. ... All their music seems relatively innocent to us, but back then any slight sexual reference their songs contained was regarded as quite uncouth. ...
Another popular genera of rock n’ roll music of the time was “acid rock”. ... Dancing, taking drugs and listening to music was their lives. ... The kids of the time, misunderstood by their parents and their government, looked at music as a quick, cheap escape into a world where they could fantasize and have no cares. ...
The young people of the time were trying to show their parents that their teachings were wrong and repressive and that music along with drugs could help take a person to a state of contentment and euphoria. ...
Rock festivals were regarded as an ideal setting for like people to come together and share peace, music and drugs. The most successful outdoor rock concert was the Woodstock Music and Art Fair held near Bethel, New York on a Catskill Mountain hog farm, numbering
600 acres, in August of 1969 (Columbia 2).
