Comparisons of Music Through the Ages

Music always has been a dynamic form of art. Every since cavemen made noises by banging animal bones together, music has been on a ever-changing and ever-evolving journey. Throughout the course of music history the world has seen extremely talented musicians come and go each adding their own individual influence to the musical landscape. ... Each artist is remembered today for changing the way popular music was viewed in the public. ... Although they each made unique contributions to music, there are also many influences of earlier music to be found. In fact many of the same qualities of music from a thousand years ago can still be heard today. Music, like many other forms of art, often deals with reusing older ideas in a new form. Consequently, there can be many comparisons made involving the characteristics of music styles used throughout the our history.
Before we can start making comparisons, it is important to know a brief history of where we stand in the timeline of music. Music was not really notated until the Middle Ages. Since the Roman Catholic church had a enormous influence on the world, it is not surprising that much of the early music to be notated was sacred. The most popular form of music in the church during this period was Gregorian chant, which was monophonic in texture and had free rhythm. During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the first secular music to be notated was composed by poet-musicians called troubadours. ... During the late fifteenth century, the Renaissance brought a polyphonic change to the music of the church. It was not until the Baroque period in the seventeenth century that we see a real evolution in the way music is perceived.
