“The madrigal gave voice to the most aristocratic ideals of musical renaissance” a quote from Paolo Malisano’s article “The Italian Madrigal”. ... In 1530 a new genre of secular music emerged in Italy; the madrigal. Claudio Monteverdi, an Italian composer and master of the madrigal, like Martin Luther, dared to be different and modernized the way music was written especially in the madrigal. ... Monteverdi was criticized for composing based on principles of the “new practice”. ... From prima prattica to seconda prattica, and Renaissance to Baroque, Claudio Monteverdi was one of the forefathers that revolutionized music composition. ... From the works of Monteverdi, we have a painted picture of the evolution of the madrigal, the introduction of emotion, and a revolution of secular music. ... Though Monteverdi applied the ideals of the seconda prattica in his works he was not the inventor or founder (Bonds, 147). Monteverdi considered composer Cipraino de Rore one of the true founders of what he called “modern music”. After listing to Rore’s madrigal Dale belle Contrade d’oriente (“From the Fair Regions of the East”) he was determined to master the eloquence in which “harmony obeys [the] words” also known as word painting, molding his compositions based upon the text (Bonds, 147). Throughout Monteverdi’s musical existence, the use of seconda prattica appears in many genres of his works. ... Monteverdi did not make a complete turn around in his style of music composition. ...
Monteverdi is seen as a principal figure in a progressive movement that included a number of composers and theorists (Malipiero, 523). Monteverdi’s madrigals envelop almost his entire innovative life (Malipiero, 517). ... In the first four books Monteverdi published, he wrote his madrigals in a traditional polyphonic texture (Bonds, 205).
