Clara Schumann a Brief Account of Her Life and Works

Clara Schumann is known as one of the greatest performers of the Romantic period. She was born Clara Josephine Weick in Leipzig, Germany on September 13, 1819 to parents Friedrich Weick, a music teacher and piano store owner, and Marianne Tromlitz Weick, a soprano singer and student of Weick. Even before her birth Clara’s father was determined to create a prodigy and a great musician of his child. Clara and her brothers received very little affection from their parents. Clara did not begin to speak until she was four years old, leading her parents to believe that she might be deaf. Clara’s mother, Marianne, soon separated from her father and took Clara and her infant son with her. A few days before Clara’s fifth birthday her father was awarded custody due to the Saxon law. After a short time the divorce was finalized and Clara saw very little of her birth mother. Marianne remarried soon after the divorce, and her father remarried when Clara was nine.
While Clara was in the sole custody of her father, he began his journey to create a musical prodigy. When Clara was five, Friedrich began to teach her piano pieces, mostly by ear, in order to assure him of the fact that Clara was in fact capable of hearing. To her father’s immense delight Clara was a quick learner. ... He was given to outbursts of rage both to Clara and her brothers. Despite his negative attributes Clara’s father was deemed a highly respectable teacher; thus, he earned the affection and respect of many very talented musicians through his progressive teaching method. ... Clara’s first public appearance was on October 20, 1828 at the young age of nine. ... Clara performed a minor part in a duet with another of Weick’s students and received the following review:

“It was especially pleasing to hear the young, musically talented Clara Weick, just nine years old, perform . ...

This first performance of the young prodigy instigated many requests for lessons from Friedrich and many invitations for Clara to perform at the houses of respected aristocrats. In 1829 Clara met and played for Niccolo Paganini. ... The meeting left a deep and powerful impression on Clara. ... ,89)
During the summer of 1830 Clara did much work in order to prepare for her first solo. ... It was in October of this year that Robert Schumann came to live in the Weick household as a student of Freidrich.
