Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) After successful completion of project requirement definition, estimation of tasks involved in a contractual or corporate project, is one of the key components of successful planning and execution of a project. A well planned and well estimated project leads to minimizing of cropping up of any unwanted surprises during the implementation phase of the project. There are a number of well tested and well proven estimation techniques available today, that help a program manager in the initial planning of any project. Not all of these techniques can be used as the only method of estimation. However, each individual technique has its own strengths and drawbacks. Some of the well known estimation techniques are Algorithmic Methods, Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), Wideband Delphi and Function Point Analysis. I personally feel that Work Breakdown Structure is a very powerful and useful technique that the program managers can rely upon in the planning phases of the product. It helps in dividing the projects into smaller and more manageable components and facilitates planning, controlling costs and scheduling and helps in getting a grip over the complete project. Definition of Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) The WBS as defined by the NASA WBS Reference Guide is, • A product-oriented family tree composed of hardware, software, services, data, and facilities. The family tree results from systems engineering efforts during the implementation of a technical project. • A WBS displays and defines the product, or products, to be developed and/or produced. It relates the elements of work to be accomplished to each other and to the end product. • A WBS can be expressed down to any level of interest. However the top three levels are as far as any program or contract need go unless the items identified are high cost or high risk. Then, and only then, is it important to take the work breakdown structure to a lower level of definition. • The WBS will be developed and maintained based on the systems engineering efforts throughout the system's life cycle.
