Humanistic thought during the Renaissance influenced the music of the time in several ways. First, the religious ideas of Martin Luther paved the way for Humanistic ideas to pervade other aspects of the European culture. ... All of these ideas of religious independence from the Catholic tradition affected the common application of the sacred music tradition. For instance, music based on sacred texts were no longer tied down to the traditional liturgical music. ... ”
The new social class of the independently wealthy was coming into its own during this period. Having no hereditary tradition of influence as the nobility had, this class used displays of wealth and high-culture to help legitimize their newly acquired influence. One display of high-culture that was commonly used was the performance of original music. This group became the new patrons of music.
