development of vocal music in the middle ages
The earliest pieces of vocal music found by historians has been the Gregorian chant. Named after Pope Gregory I, this music is written in Latin, and sung a capella. Though the music is named directly after pope Gregory I, it is well known that he really had little to do with the development of the Gregorian chant. For 1,000 years, the Gregorian chant was the official music of the Roman Catholic church, and for many years, composers have been base their compositions on the Gregorian chants of the past.
