As with most musicians, Mahler’s childhood had an impact on his music. Unfortunately, Mahler ‘s childhood was full of complications. ... In addition to being reared in a loveless marriage, Mahler’s personality was affected by the death of several of his siblings in childhood. Equally important, were the ethnic difficulties Mahler endured as a child. ... But this is not all, Mahler was an outsider within the minority Austrian population because he was Jewish. However, being an outsider may have provided Mahler with the adaptability to compose and conduct music regardless of criticism.
The first indication Mahler would eventually become a great musician occurred at his grandparents’ house. Mahler’s parents and grandparents found him playing a melody on a piano stored in the attic before he was able to even see the piano keys. ... Bernhard Mahler recognized his son’s talent and enrolled him in piano lessons. Mahler performed his first public recital at age ten and interestingly, he was employed as a piano teacher at about age 10. However, Mahler, frustrated by other childrens’ lack of musical abilities, had a tendency to resort to slapping hands and ears and consequently did not teach for very long. By age 15, Mahler was accepted as a student at the Vienna Conservatory.
