I’ll never forget the day I received the letter that spoke of my being chosen to play for the Boys’ Club of New York’s basketball team in its two week touring of Cuba, during the summer of 2001. I had no idea what to expect of this country, considering its being a socialist, third world nation. Would it be anything like home? Would the Cuban people hate us, considering the poor relationship between the United States and Cuba because of the embargo? Would we be safe? In search of a better understanding of this country, I took the initiative to read Waiting for Fidel, by Christopher Hunt, chronicling his journey through Cuba. This book would answer many of my questions and inspire me to write a journal about my experience there as well. This expedition also has convinced me that I should pursue international economics in the years to come.
