Music and all art is an essential part of the human experience and the basic understanding to appreciate music can only serve to broaden ones character and deepen ourselves and those around us. Jazz has provided that being an American art form allowing an ideal that is created first in the mind and inspiring ones passion to be emotional rather than intellectual. Jazz draws its audience to many levels of soul and it’s also nurtured by the involvement of the interactive audience. The jazz movement originated in the southern city of New Orleans in the 1890s. Jazz developed as African Americans combined the energy and rhythms of African music with the sound and instruments of the western world. This style was condemned at first as the Devils music. ... In this paper I will discus the many styles of jazz ranging from ragtime, bebop, and cool jazz.
Ragtime was one of the first jazz styles to develop, and its role and range of styles has been hidden by the passage of time. ... Taylor states that ragtime is jazz music, and was the popular music of the early 20th century.
