|
Psycho, a film by the famous Alfred Hitchcock, was first made in 1960, and is to this day, one of the most well known movies of all time. ... Hitchcocks camera helped to guide us on this journey but Herrmann score was the knife that brought Psycho home. ...
The film begins with the credits made by Saul Bass, in which all the titles are cut and pulled apart accompanied by driving, sinister music (Prelude). ... Prelude is used in these sequences as the music unleashes an unyielding forward motion and it conveys Marions mental anxiety. These scenes often comprise of just Marion sitting driving with rain lashing the window, which isnt interesting in itself, but the menace of Herrmanns music provides virtually the entire atmosphere. In one part of the scene,
the music is even synchronised with the action of the windscreen wipers. ... The overall result is that when the audience hear particular pieces of the music, they instantly get a feeling of impending doom for Marion.
The music used in the Shower Scene (4 depicting the murder of the main character, Marion (only about 40 minutes into the film) is brilliant in its simplicity, and is one of the most famous pieces of film music ever written.
