In this chapter, I discovered the different characteristics of a person’s mind and how one’s personality acts and reacts to situations at hand. I learned that personality is the grouped system of typical responses to situations and actions, as well as one’s thoughts and emotions, which make them unique. There are four different perspectives dealing with personality: 1) the psychoanalytic perspective; 2) the trait perspective; 3) the humanistic perspective; 4) the social-cognitive perspective.
The psychoanalytic perspective deals with personality and behavior caused by unconscious motives and conflicts. ... The concept of personality development is based on the concept of perfection of oneself and one’s reaction in order to acquire a well-developed personality. ... I learned about the projective tests, in which subjects reveal aspects of their personality when they talk about ambiguous stimuli—involves the Thematic Apperception Test and the Rorschach inkblot test. ... I thought that this was really interesting because the use of factor analysis helped psychologists to come up with the "Big Five" personality factors, which categorize people’s personalities into five different sections: emotional stability, extraversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness. I also found it very interesting that psychologists are able to assess several traits at once by personality inventories (longer questionnaires that cover a wider range of feelings and behaviors). The most popular personality inventory is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventoryŕ it assess abnormal personality tendencies and illustrates a good way of developing a personality inventory, rather than other tests. ... What I learned from humanistic psychology is that it’s basically the focus on inner life, but not unconscious motives and hidden motives like the psychoanalytic perspective.
