“Punk n. ... Short for punk rock. ... ” Look in any dictionary and punk will be there with a plethora of meanings. However none of these definitions touch upon the punk musical revolution. No one knew what punk was, no one from any other previous generation would understand it, and it was like nothing else ever seen. Upon its inception punk was considered, rebellious, dangerous, and a dark spot in society. ... However, it wasn’t so much the music that made the punk scene what it was. ... The Scene New York and Britain became the breeding ground for all punk music in the mid 70s. ... If you didn’t play here, you weren’t punk. Every big punk band played here, The Clash and the Sex Pistols made the 100 club, the Ramones did the same with CBGB’s, and the Velvet Underground with The Factory. ... Unlike many other types of music Punk was not primarily about putting out records. It was the live shows which made punk what it is. The Bands The Ramones The Ramones are credited with bringing punk mainstream more so than probably any other band out there. Their 3 chord, 2 minute songs became the standard to how punk was supposed to be played. ... “The Ramones created the sound of punk.” (Colegrave and Sullivan) The Sex Pistols Bringing up punk and leaving out The Sex Pistols is a nearly impossible feat. According to Marcus Greil no other punk band was able to become as internationally known as they were. |
