String Trio
... The first two lines in the first stanza, from the poem String Trio by Gwen Harwood. ... “Write, for new ages to discuss, a ravishing string trio” instructs Leopold, a further example of authority he implies. He forces Mozart to write a string trio, but Mozart who says “string trio’s make me sick”. This is a clever twist of irony by Harwood as a string trio’s hardly compares with the music that Mozart wrote for whole orchestras.
Leopold seems to think he has the boy’s best interests at heart, first using means of adulation top encourage Mozart to write this string trio, “OK you little genius” and “Just jot it down my brilliant son” and then when the boy refuses “Don’t want to” said the surly boy” the father replies with a line that had obviously been used before “Write it” (said dad) “or I’ll employ our common friend the stick”.
