the beautiful people M.Manson

The social and historical background, of James Moloney’s ‘A Bridge to Wiseman’s Cove’, contributes to the way the author explores issues about the way families and businesses operate. Some of the author’s major concerns are about dysfunctional families, shady business practices, small town attitudes, stereotyping people, scapegoating and assumptions. The major social issue that the author, James Moloney, explores in the novel is the structure and function of families. The dysfunction of the Matt family is compared with the supportive and caring nature of the Duncan family throughout the story. “Not really part of a family though, are we? Mum gone, Sarah gone. We’re not part of anything.” Carl, referring to Harley and himself - page 119. “They’re a family. That’s what families do. Talk about things.” Justine, talking about the Duncans – page 119. From there two quotes, it’s clear that the Duncan family functions better than the Matts and that the author supports the function of the Duncans. The structures of the Matt and Duncan families are very different as well. The Matts aren’t part of a conventional family, in that all three children have different fathers, none of whom are still around, and now even the mother and sister have left, separately.
