As this story begins one can tell that the setting is in someone's view of what is the future. We are introduced to our main character, named Winston Smith. He lives in a society that is ran completley by a dictator named "Big Brother". Everything a person does and thinks is known and controlled. There are three large ministries of which people work for. Winston works at the Ministry of Truth. We come to find that Winston has secret thoughts of opposition and one day he decides to rebel and write a diary. In doing so he is committing a crime called thoughtcrime.
