The year is 1984. As a member of Oceanic society, you are treated not by gender or race. So far, this may sound like the perfect society, with no discrimination. But in this society you are treated according to your status; if you are a member of the inner party you live a life of luxury, if you are from the outer party you are handled reasonably and if you are a “prole” you are one of 85% of the population who is treated like garbage. There is no religion: You can only believe in Big Brother. The three tenets of the society are “War is Peace, Freedom is slavery, Ignorance is Strength”. The past is changed to make it appear that Big Brother predicted the present circumstances correctly. It is a totalitarian society: You are watched 24/7 by devices called telescreens and are monitored by the Thought Police, a squad who can read your thoughts. … Fortunately, this society is fictional. It is the creation of George Orwell who wrote the book 1984 from the perspective of Winston, an outer party member who wishes for the day that he won’t be oppressed by the ever-watchful eye of Big Brother.
