A re-telling of part of the story from the perspective of Jacq Chapter 6 BBBrrrriiiinnngggg … bbbbrrrriiiinnngggg. The phone rang. I put down the newspaper I was reading; a story on the success of pop-boy bands compared to rebellious punk bands, and picked up the phone. It was Chris Burns’ mother and I’d been expecting this call all day. A high-pitched voice spoke as I prepared myself with the things Dan had told me the night before. “Hello… Yes I’m enquiring about this University gathering tomorrow night that involves my son Chris.” “A… yes, you must be Chris’ Mother. “ I said, a little to enthusiastically. “Correct and you are?” “Jacq will do fine thanks Mrs. Burns” “ Well I was rather hoping to speak to Margot’s sister” “Well then you’ve come to the right person, I’m Madge’s sister”, already I was sounding a bit suspicious. “Oh, I just expected someone a little older that’s all” I twisted the phone cord between my fingers. I could see that this was going to take a while. And I know how protective some parents can be, looking after Dan on the odd occasion and having Madge as a sister. Madge and I are very different I suppose, she never really understood me and that’s probably because of the age difference and all that, me being more ‘new age’, and her, I guess, still being slightly old-fashioned.
