The Killer Angels, a Civil War historical novel about the battle of Gettysburg, takes place June 30 through July 3, 1863, in a small Pennsylvania farm town called Gettysburg. On the morning of June 30, a spy tells Confederate General James Longstreet that he has seen the Union army a few miles away. Longstreet informs General Robert E. Lee, the commander of the Confederate army. The Confederate army then travels southwest toward Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Longstreet thinks that the Confederates should go around the Union army, and station themselves between the Union army and Washington DC, forcing the Union army to attack while the Confederates practiced “defensive warfare”. Lee refuses, saying that he wants to attack the enemy head on. At the same time, the leader of the Union cavalry, John Buford, is informed that there are Confederate troops nearby Gettysburg, so he takes his two brigades up into the hills and waits for them.
