Analysis of Night Revision

The memoir of Elie Wiesel, Night, retells his story of living in a very turbulent time. Set in Sighet, in late World War II, Elie Wiesel and his family are being sent to a concentration camp by the German Nazis. Despite warnings that offer a window of escape, the family decides to stay. The Wiesels, their neighborhood, and closest friends are then finally sent away. Elie begins his journey facing death at Auschwitz and ends up happily alive. Wiesel’s book follows the childhood of a young, scared boy through his physical, spiritual, and, most noticeably, his emotional changes. Elie undergoes many physical changes during his time in the concentration camps; however, Elie shows unbelievable resistance. Elie begins his time in the concentration camp thinking of it as a home away from home, but soon comes to terms with himself and realizes he faces starvation and disease every passing day: “The stomach alone was aware of the passage of time” (50). This metaphor illustrates the hunger Elie goes through as he survives in the camps; Elie’s size diminishes rapidly, from normal to barely breathing: “The SS pushed us in, a hundred to a carriage, we were so thin” (92).
