After sending Philostrate, his Master of Revels, off to find sutible amusements for a four-day festival of pomp for his comming marriage, Theseus (duke of Athens) was sought out by a man named Egeus with a compliant. His daughter, Hermia, has refused his wishes for her to marry to Demetrius, who is in love with Hermia. Hermia, however, is smitten with a man named Lysander, who in turn, is smitten with her as well. After having their turn in saying their views, Theseus explains that the Athenian Law is in favor of Egeus. She must either obey her father’s wishes or either be sent to become a nun, or die. She was given the day until Theseus would be married to Hippolyta, the Amazon warrior queen, to decide upon the two options given to her.
