A Streetcar Named Desire

In Tennessee William’s play “A Streetcar Named Desire” the characters do not always see the world the way it truly is. A character may disbelieve something that is real, or make something up as an escape from reality. I think Williams uses this theme to show different ways that people try to cope with reality and the consequences of their coping mechanisms. Of the three main characters Blanche has the most difficulty with reality. She spends a lot of her time soaking in the tub “to quiet her nerves” (Williams 32) or drinking even though she says she rarely touches it (30). According to her she is taking a short leave from her job as a high school English teacher. However, Stanley finds from an associate of his that she is not on leave, but that she was fired because of immoral conduct with a student of hers (101). She also believes that she has a famous, rich Miami millionaire as an admirer of hers.
