... Atticus Finch is an atypical man and an atypical father. Hailing from Finches Landing and residing in nearby Maycomb County, Alabama, Atticus is a professional attorney in the Depression stricken south. ... He is an excellent father in his own right; he tries to pass on his respect, wisdom and integrity to his children by allowing his actions to speak louder than his words. Atticus Finch is a man of great respect and is not only respectful of humans, but any and all life forms he has contact with. ... At one point in the novel, the Finch children, Jem and Scout, and their friend, Dill Harris portray their imaginative thoughts about the Radleys and their affairs by role-playing the family. Atticus is upset with the children because of the amount of disrespect they show toward the Radleys. Atticus said the children were "putting his lifes history on display for the edification of the neighbourhood" (page 49) and ordered them to stop all "nonsense" that has to do with the Radleys. Atticus is rarely stern with his children, preferring to let them find out the consequences of their actions on their own. ... A second example of Atticus respect is that of more importance. ... Atticus proves his respect toward coloured people many times throughout the book.
