Asher Lev’s Rain and Snow
Symbolism is a necessary part of any great novel. ... In the novel My Name is Asher Lev by Chaim Potok a vast amount of symbolism is used. Potok uses rain and snow extensively as symbols of Asher’s life and how he’s feeling at those chosen moments.
Rain is one the first symbols in the book. It is used at a time when Asher begins to see the world as an ugly place. ... Rivkeh has rarely come out of her room and when she does Asher barely recognizes her as the loving mother she once was. It is at this time, when Asher is worried and frightened of what is happening to his mother, that it becomes cold and begins to rain. The rain continues all through the day and into the night, making the street seem as though it is crying. ... ” It began raining when Asher’s life becomes more complicated and he begins to see the world in a different light. ...
Later in the novel the rain becomes intermingled with snow. The snow falls in a powdery mist, but lands in the street as rain.
