A Tale of Two Cities is about the lives of people living in France and England. It starts in 1775. During this time there is much political turmoil in both France and England. France is battling the beginning of what will be the French Revolution and England is amerced in the Industrial Revolution. The French turmoil is all about money. The aristocracy feels that the poor are worthless and it makes the poor, who are the majority, furious. The poor have no work and food gets scarcer by the year. This is what causes the Revolution to occur and the killing of the nobility and clergy. In England crime was running rampant. Dickens even says, “Daring burglaries by armed men, and highway robberies, took place in the capital itself every night.” King George III was to busy with the rebellious American colonies to worry about what was going on in his country. “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…” Dickens was trying to show that the same life could be perceived differently. During the French Revolution it was some of the best times for the bourgeoisie but it was the worst times for the very poor and very wealthy.
