All Quiet on the Western Front By Erich Maria Remarque “Patriotism is the last refuge of scoundrels.” This quote means that loyalty to your country is the only way out for the unprincipled people. This might be the only savior for them. The two people that are examples of this are Kantorek (schoolmaster) and Corporal Himmelstoss (old drill sergeant). Kantorek was one of those scoundrels in several ways. Kantorek was the first person that introduced war to the group and how it was an honor to join. Kantorek was always telling Paul and the group that they are the “Iron Youth” yet they have not even reached the age of 20. He said that war was an honorable thing, but he did not know because he was never there.
