Attitude in Heart of Darkness

Conrad clearly sets up a complex attitude as he juxtaposes two contrasting attitudes in this piece. ... ” This dehumanization obviously creates a downhearted and gloomy attitude to the piece and certainly causes the reader to view these men as Marlow does, with sympathy (since it is a description through his perspective). The despondent attitude that Conrad creates in the beginning also makes it appear as though Marlow has pity on the six men walking. Conrad uses very dismal diction to enhance this attitude such as when he states, “Behind this raw matter one of the reclaimed, the product of the new forces at work, strolled despondently…” (17 – 19).
